Education Projects:

Under the Girls Education Challenge – Transition (GEC-T) locally referred to Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu” (WWW) project, targeting 79 Schools with a total of 8100 girls beneficiary Benefiting with 9 interventions namely: Cash transfers, bursaries 290 girls who joined secondary in 2017 and,        mentorship, 500 back to school kits, catch up, teacher coach and training in all 79 schools, family travel grants, community conversations with IGA, solar lamps. Digital Learning: Teachers were provided with Tablets and projectors under the teacher coach and training. Main objective in Keeping Girls in schools ensuring they transition from one level to another, attend school regularly and improve both numeracy and literacy.

Offered Girl’s scholarship programme, at Garissa county, was implemented reached 20 schools. Fafi girls, 63 girls, Umu salama girls s, 71 girls, NEP girls, 85 girls, Husuf Haji, 57 girls, Hulugho girls 46 girls, Banane 50 girls, Saka Girls, 43 girls, Iftin Girls 58 girls, Mbala mbala girls 59, Detu girls 54, Ijara secondary 52 girls, County mix secondary 44 girls, Madogashe 71 girls with the763 girls. PGI supported primary schools with uniform and sanitary, Hyugha and ADC primary.

Developed Physical Infrastructure Projects: Construction of Fafi girls’ secondary school. Identification of land, fencing, construction, and equipping. Setting up classrooms, kitchen, dormitory, laboratory, IGA, dairy goats and poultry. Done in partnership with Safaricom foundation. Water collection and equipping of laboratory at Hulugho girls’ secondary school in Ijara sub county, renovation and equipping of laboratory, toilets and roof water collection and 10,000liters Water storage tank installed. Equipping of laboratory and setting up of poultry farm in Banane secondary school, Madogashe secondary Lagdera Sub County.  Construction of dining hall, provision of laboratory equipment and construction of school dispensary Umusalama girls’ secondary school. At, Iftin Girls secondary school, laboratory and dining hall was constructed.

Conducted Girl’s camp that reached a total of 1500 girls in 100 project target school and will to empower girls with life skills and child rights. Girls will also have an opportunity to share their concerns and lobby for support, lobby for establishment of girls’ friendly schools. This will enable the girls to challenge the social norms and also claim their rights of duty bearers. Provision of Sanitary Pads to 1500 girls as a compliment of the government program of sanitary towel provision to schools. As well the project provided menstrual hygiene Education to the girls.

 

Sexual Gender Based Violence and Reproductive Health Projects:

Anti FGM Program & End Child marriagesThrough the Caravan of Hope for Ending Child Marriages project; facilitated and organized community awareness meetings and town hall meeting to create awareness and sensitization on end ECM. Conduct religious leaders meeting to end ECM. Conducted door to door meeting with women leaders to educate the community on ECM. Facilitated and organize youth café session to champion to end ECM. Trained 40 girls champions and Network leaders on End Child Marriages. 

Using With and For Girls Flexible FUNDS conducted One day Event Career Guidance and Counselling for 240 Girls in selected Schools in 3 sub counties of Garissa, Fafi and Ijara, 5 days HIV Prevention & Sexual reproductive Health Right Training for 20 girls, Support 5 girls to attend National Girl Summit on Ending Child Marriages in Nairobi, Conduced Community Awareness Session with Fathers to Promote Education for all in 5 villages, Conducted forum for community leaders on strategies to address cultural issues  affecting Girls and boys education: NiSasa” Ending Violence Against Women and Girls. This Project was implemented in Garissa and Tana River Counties. The Goal was “A Strong, coordinated efforts by state and non-state actors to end Violence Against Women and Girls in Garissa and Tana River Counties. While the Objectives are: To strengthen coordination and political will and action by County and Sub-national level actors in peace, safety and security towards non-tolerance to VAWG, to contribute to improved access to justice for survivors of VAWG including sexual and gender-based violence and other rights violations. and finally to Advocate with County government and Sub-national government units to develop gender responsive policy, operational guidelines and action plans for VAWG prevention and response.

End child Marriage Network Northern Kenya Technical lead; PGI is the technical led for ECM northern Kenya a network with more than 60 CSO nationally under the stewardship of AMREF Health Africa and Plan International. In northern Kenya the network has 18 organisations spread in the following Counties, Garissa, Tana River, wajir, Isiolo, and Marsabit.

SRH-Targeting 54 groups (1150 girls) aged between 10-24 years, Pastoralist Girls Initiative trained them on Sexual reproductive health, in particular, reproductive health services (nutrition, counselling, family planning etc) offered in the health facilities. Under the same program, PGI trained healthcare workers (nurses and CHVs) on basic counselling and youth friendly services.

Livelihood related- under USAID funded GIRL –  H program, PGI enrolled 6300 girls across Garissa County grouped into groups of 25 participants. The aim of the program includes: Adolescents and youth in the GIRL-H program use life skills and social capital for improved well-being and personal agency, adolescent girls, boys, and young women have increased access to educational opportunities, safe economic livelihoods, and/or civic engagement and Public, private, and civil sectors foster an enabling environment in which girls are valued to access their human rights and exercise their personal agency.

2008-2015 Project

  • A fully-fledged dispensary was constructed, equipping and linking with the government in Diiso in 2013 and is in operation in Ijara serving 1,000 community members.
  • Renovation and equipping of the old dispensary at Ruqa serving 400 households.
  • Renovation and equipping of the old dispensary at Gababa, Fafi subcounty, serving 200 households. Lactating mothers outreach programme and immunization
  • Currently in partnership with Safaricom Foundation and Garissa County Government Health Sector implementing, “Restoring hope in children with diabetes” that have already
  • Successfully Trained 100 CHVs.
  • 60 Health Care Workers Trained.
  • 125 children and Adolescent enrolled into the program.
  • Children will benefit from training and supplies of diabetes medicine.
  • 1 Diabetes friendly Clinic to be constructed.
  • 6 health facilities renovated to be friendly centres for children with Diabetes.
Women themselves have the right to live in dignity, in freedom from want and freedom from fear.
